The eighty-four essays in this compilation appeared, with one exception, as editorials in the Latter-day Saints’ Millennial Star. They are here reproduced as they were printed. Each one has a gospel message, as befits a missionary product. Each one points a way to happy service, on earth as beyond, in the kingdom of God. The title of the book implies man’s constant, but victorious battle with the forces of evil issuing from “the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and Satan.” Many of the pieces in the first several sections relate stories of Widtsoe's travels in Europe with gospel applications. One collection of essays "Science and Religion," where Widtsoe, as a scientist, has an especially interesting perspective. Much of the balance of the book consists of pieces on various Gospel topics, often presented from a rather different perspective than you'd get from a modern Sunday School manual. 263 pages
