Even as a boy in France, Lafayette was conscious of the evils of excessive power, although he was born into a noble family, and at the age of fourteen fell heir to a large fortune and the title of Marquis (a nobleman ranking between duke and earl or count).
Inspired by the American fight for freedom from England, Lafayette, with a few of his friends, sailed for American to offer his help. He was received coolly but when he offered to serve without pay in the American Army, he soon became a Major General. At this time he met Washington, who came to look upon the young Frenchman almost as a son. Lafayette gave his service and his money to the American cause and in so doing earned the gratitude and friendship of the American people. He returned twice to America after the War, once in 1784 and again in 1824. Both times, a grateful nation received him with enthusiasm. He had helped secure the aid of France during the War, which led to the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown, and assisted in the negotiations that won American independence. When word was received of his passing in 1834, Congress adopted a series of resolutions, expressive of honor to the dead, and condolences to the family. 208 pages
