John A. Widtsoe (1872-1952)

Born in Norway, he immigrated to The United States in 1883. He graduated from Harvard in 1894 with a degree in agriculture. After teaching at BYU for a short time, he was appointed president of the University of Utah until his calling to the Quorum of the Twelve in 1921. He served as Church Education Commissioner twice. While a member of the Twelve, he served as president of the European Mission. He was also an accomplished author, publishing many books on Church doctrine, and editing the Improvement Era magazine.
