John Whitmer (1802-1878)

John met Joseph Smith in 1829, when the translation of the Book of Mormon was taking place at the Whitmer home. He assisted Joseph and Oliver Cowdery in compiling and transcribing the revelations of Joseph, and was chosen to become one of the Eight Witnesses to the Book of Mormon. He became Church Historian in 1831, and continued in that position until his excommunication in 1838. He never rejoined the Church. He returned to Far West, Missouri, after the Saints were expelled, and lived out the remainder of his life as a successful farmer and rancher.
