John Taylor (1808-1887)

Born in England, he came to Canada in 1832. One of the deepest thinkers of early Mormonism, President John Taylor was known among the Saints as the "Champion of Right" and called at his death the "double martyr"-the last appellation coming from being shot four times at Carthage at the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith and spending his last years as President of the Church in hiding because of laws against plural marriage. He had a rich background as a young apostle, missionary, Book of Mormon translator, editor of both the Millennial Star and Times and Seasons, and territorial legislator. His doctrinal exposition is still considered to be among the most profound of LDS writers.
