Orson Pratt (1811-1881)
Perhaps one of the most intellectual of early Church leaders, Orson Pratt was an able speaker, writer, and teacher. Chosen to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve at the age of twenty-four, his Church experiences were extraordinary. He was a member of the advance party entering the Salt Lake Valley; he was active in the territorial legislature; and he divided both the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants into chapters and verses as they now exist. Many of his writings were speculative and sometimes at odds with other leaders, but he was tireless in his pursuit of truth and his efforts to bring it to the early Saints.
