Thomas L. Kane (1822-1883)

A courageous friend of the Latter-day Saints, Kane was born in Philadelphia, and was admitted to the bar in 1846. Then came a period of service with the U.S. Army, following which he became known as Colonel Kane. He began to help the Church in 1846 when Brother Jesse C. Little was seeking help from the Federal Government in their migration westward. The Saints named their settlement in Iowa after him (Kanesville - now Council Bluffs) in recognition of his service. He was able to mediate a peaceful settlement to the "Utah War" in 1858.
