The Joseph Smith Monument Dedication (1905)

In 1905, under the direction of President Joseph F. Smith, Junius F. Wells purchased the 283 acre site of the birthplace of the Prophet Joseph Smith in Sharon, Vermont. He also envisioned a 40-ton granite monument at the site, which was then dedicated by President Smith on the 100th anniversary of the Prophet's birth. A Visitor's Center cottage was later built on the actual site of the Smith home. President Smith remembered, "I don't think there is another man in the Church who could have done it. I don't know another man within the range of my acquaintance who could have accomplished the work that Junius F. Wells accomplished in building the monument in Vermont, in memory of the Prophet Joseph Smith." 157pp. 978-0-9819527-1-0 [-history-]
