The Tennessee Massacre & Its Causes or the Utah Conspiracy by John Nicholson (1884)

Elder B. H. Roberts in disguise (on the cover of this book) returned to Tennessee to exhume the bodies of Elders Perry and Gibbs to return them to their families in Utah. The blatant murder of LDS missionaries added fuel to the existing sentiment among the Saints that there was a condoned effort throughout the United States to eradicate the Mormons.

Elder John Nicholson was both a popular writer and speaker during the 1880s. This lecture was delivered in the Salt Lake Theatre to a crowded group of Utahns following the enactment of the burdonsome Edmunds Act wherein "Unlawful Cohabitation" was decreed to be a federal offense with severe legal consequences. Elder Nicholson's sarcasm and humor - as well as his reception by the Saints - are indicative of the Saint's mood and suspicions of a general conspiracy aginst them. 79pp. 978-1-930679-16-0 [-history-]
