George A. Smith (1817-1875)
Born in New York, he was a cousin to the Prophet Joseph, and joined the Church in 1832. He participated in Zions Camp in 1834, then spent the summers of 1835, 1836 and 1837 as a missionary in the eastern states, while attending school during each winter. He was ordained to the Quorum of the Twelve in 1839. After the Saints had relocated to Utah, he and about 30 other families settled in Iron County in 1851, building a fort at Parowan. He became First Counselor to President Brigham Young in 1868.
