George Q. Cannon (1827-1901)

Few men in the Church have possessed as much leadership and have had the diverse experiences given to George Quayle Cannon. Left an orphan in his teens, he was raised and soon apprenticed in Nauvoo to his uncle, John Taylor-then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve. At the age of thirty-three he was himself appointed to be a member of that Quorum and later called as an additional Counselor to President Brigham Young. Following President Young's death in 1877, he successively served as the First Counselor to Presidents John Taylor and Wilford Woodruff.

Despite both the internal and governmental turmoil during his tenure in the Church's governing counsels, President Cannon continued as the director of George Q. Cannon & Sons-forerunner of today's Deseret Book Company-and was a prolific writer. A rare person who had the ability to write for youth as well as adults, President Cannon's contributions to LDS History and the education of the Church's youth have left a lasting mark.
